I'm A Night Runner: Neil Hume

For the next "I'm a Night Runner" feature, we're excited to share wisdom from night runner Neil Hume. Interested in being featured? Please email beachy@beachymedia.com.

  1. How long have you been a runner? I started running almost exactly 7 years ago at the age of 36.
  2. Why did you start running? Everyone seemed to be signing up to run my local 5k, the Highland Park Run in the Park 5k. I thought I might as well join in - I had much more fun than I though possible so I made a decision to start running. Now I'm a race director for that race.
  3. What was your favorite race? Last year I ran the London Marathon in memory of my father who died the year before. I ran for a Myeloma charity. I had friends and family out on the course so stopped to greet them all and take photos. The crowds in general were amazing and not pushing myself meant that I could just take it all in, and somehow I managed a faster second half. It was very emotional.
  4. What time do you usually run? In the evening during the week, or in the morning at weekends.
  5. Why do you run at night? With my work schedule there's no other choice.
  6. What's your favorite part of running at night? I like running through the local park when no one else is around and I can only see as far as the lights I have with me can reach.
  7. Who is your running inspiration? I can't say there's any one individual. My running club, RVRR, provides a lot of inspiration. I also do some coaching in my spare time and get inspiration from my clients achievements.
  8. Give us a fun fact! I recently saw a post on a page called "Very British Problems" and I've taken it as my personal mantra: if i could have one super power, it would be to have the ability to talk to people without it all going wrong.
