How to Become a Morning Person

There’s nothing harder than waking up to your early morning alarm in a dark, chilly room nestled in a warm bed, then dragging yourself into the cold to go for a run. We’ve tried it all: alarm clock across the room, cold showers, motivational quotes on the bathroom mirror, and 17 alarms progressing from “time to wake up, you beautiful runner” to “seriously, get out of bed or you’re going to regret it.”

You asked and we listened. Night Runner has compiled a few of our favorite tips and tricks to make that early morning run happen.

A mile a day keeps the doctor away.

Set a daily goal for a month, whether a half a mile, a mile, 5k–doesn’t matter the distance, but the consistency is key. Get out there and get running every single day. Not feeling it? Keep your daily mileage at a below-easy pace. Ready to take on the world? Bump up the milage and the speed.

Mentally prepare the night before.

You know those nights where you fall asleep thinking “if I wake up to my alarm and feel good, I’ll go for a run, but if not I’ll sleep in a little?”...don’t do that. Fall asleep knowing that you’re going to wake up the next morning and, no matter what, lace up your shoes, slip those Night Runners on, and get out the door.

Commit to running with a new friend.

Old running buddies are great, but it’s always a good idea to sign up for a run with someone new. It’s much harder to send that text saying “I’m going to sleep in tomorrow morning” text to a new friend instead of your usual running buddy. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new runners in your community!
